Transgender Models ‘Snubbed’ In Spring 2016 Ad Campaigns

The Spring 2016 diversity report is in and the statistics are pretty depressing.

According to the report compiled by The Fashion Spot, transgender models were “snubbed in this season’s fashion ad campaigns.

“Not a single transgender model was featured,” they wrote. “A phenomenon we haven’t seen since Spring 2015.”

The publication call the statistics a “heavily disappointing” regression from the autumn 2016 runways, which saw eight transgender castings at Fashion Weeks in New York, Paris and London.

Transgender models were also the least represented group in ad campaigns for autumn 2015.

Only three transgender models made the cut, and all three women were white – Andreja Pejic posed for Kenneth Cole, while Valentijn De Hingh and Hari Nef fronted an ad for & Other Stories (pictured above).

In an interview with The Huffington Post UK, transgender model Johanna Londium explained why it’s so important for fashion to be inclusive of the transgender community.

“People across all walks of life look at and follow fashion and trends,” she said.

“We’re all educated by exposure, so if the industry uses a diverse range of models then people will be exposed to other types of people they may otherwise not be.”
